I did when I watched the show as a teenager. Coming back to it as an adult I just want to get the poor kid some stable parental figures and a bucket load of therapy

Watching the first time Dawn was extremely annoying. But I think that was the point. The viewer was able to empathize with Buffy because we knew what things were like without Dawn. Everything seemed good and then a little sibling appears out of nowhere and screws everything up. Now Buffy is expected to be responsible for Dawn and the only child in her pushes back against it. Yes, Buffy has the false memories put in her mind by the monks, but I think the show demonstrates that Buffy's subconscious knows that something is not right.
